Tear Trough

This is the hollowing which develops under the eye with ageing. It leads to a tired-looking appearance and quite possibly the use of copious amounts of concealer. People who have tear troughs are often told by friends and family how tired they are looking even when they have no problems with sleeping which can be very frustrating. Treating the underlying cause with dermal filler can give truly stunning results.

This is an advanced procedure requiring skill and experience. Results are instant and long lasting.

How is this achieved?

Small amounts of hyaluronic acid filler are injected directly into the hollowing under the eyes. There is an instant plumping up which reduces the hollow and subsequent shadowing.  Dr Sabba uses a cannula for this procedure but may make some final tweaks with a needle.

The tip of a needle is sharp whereas the tip of a cannula is blunt. This reduces the risk of bruising and swelling significantly. To insert the cannula a needle is required for the entry point however after this a relatively large area can be treated without the need for multiple needle punctures.  It is also far less likely to pierce a blood vessel under the skin.

Please note in some patients cheek filler is required prior to injecting the tear trough region.  This is because volume loss in the cheek fat pad results in less support in the under-eye area.  In these cases, injecting the tear trough directly will not achieve the most aesthetically pleasing result.  At your consultation following an examination a treatment plan will be formulated and discussed.

How long does the treatment take?

One hour is allocated to this procedure. Time is spent in the appointment carefully cleaning and disinfecting the skin, for clinical photographs to be taken and to carefully mark the skin. Numbing cream is also applied the under eye area.  It is very important to never rush a treatment.  Keeping safe and minimising the risk of complications is always the priority.

Does it hurt?

As numbing cream is applied for 15 minutes prior to the procedure it is virtually painless.  The filler itself also contains a local anaesthetic making this a very well tolerated treatment.

When will I see results?

Results are instant and there is further improvement over a four-week period as the dermal filler integrates into the area injected.  It is crucial not to place too much product in the under-eye area as the filler improves with time and this prevents puffiness and ensures natural looking results.

How long does the treatment last?

Results usually last 1-2 years in the majority of patients making this a very long-lasting procedure.  Over time the filler gradually breaks down and the result will fade.  At this point the treatment can be repeated.

What are the side-effects?

The eye area is very delicate so there is an increased risk of bruising and swelling which can last 3-7 days.  Any bruising can be covered with make-up the next day.  If you are prone to bruising then arnica tablets or gel can speed up the healing time.

Will I need a check-up?

Aftercare is very important to Dr Sabba so a four-week follow-up is arranged for all patients in order to review the final result.

What about pigmentation around the eye area?

This is more challenging to treat and there is no treatment that will completely remove them however there are several options which can be discussed at the consultation. These include treatment with platelet rich plasma (PRP) and meso-therapy.  Skincare also plays a role.

What is the cost?

Treatment starts from £595
